To The Moon : ReelOut & Three Things Consulting Opening Gala
January 31 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
For 26 years, ReelOut’s programming committee has chosen exciting and original cinematic stories to launch each festival. This year, we celebrate cinematic storytellers from Atlantic Canada in this program and then again on the following Friday also at 7pm with a different line-up of films.
To the Moondir. Kevin Hartford/85min/Canada/2024
TO THE MOON is a story about three people finding themselves. Sam is a single parent who, faced with an impending empty nest, has to figure out who he is outside of being a dad, and whether or not that involves coming out of the closet after nearly four decades of being nestled safely within it. His daughter, Ella, is struggling to navigate the treacherous waters of teenagerhood at a new school while dealing with a father who needs more guidance than she does. Their curious new neighbour, Claire, has recently abandoned her corporate life to pursue a career as a writer, and her attempts to mine inspiration from the father-daughter team next door lead to some surprising revelations about her future from some wildly unexpected sources. And all three of these people are doing their best to prevent the moon from crashing into the earth.

On and On and On – dir. Evelyn Pakinewatik/10:18/Canada/2024/English and Mi’kmaq
Filmed on the sacred ceremonial lands of my home territory, following the pathways and protocols specific to my family and to myself as a disabled artist. This film holds great personal significance for me. I believe that Albert’s message and teachings are important and should be shared with (and hopefully understood by) as many people as possible.
Daniel le Tisserand (Daniel the Weaver) –dir. Julien Cadieux/9:00/2024/Canada/French with English subtitles
Daniel, un homme séropositif, tisse sa nouvelle identité dans son village acadien.
