GIRLHOOD (Bande de Filles) d. Celine Sciamma/112min/France/2014
From director Celine Sciamma (Tomboy) comes this beautiful, intense and meditative exploration of young women coming of age in the projects of suburban Paris. Oppressed by her family setting, dead-end school prospects and the boys in her neighborhood, Marieme starts a new life after meeting a group of 3 free-spirited girls. She changes her name, her dress code, and quits school to be accepted in the gang, hoping that this will be a way to freedom. This film was selected to premiere at the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival and is an excellent showcase for the young talented cast and for Sciamma who continues to shine as a director.
