Breaking the Ice directed by Clara Stern/Austria/2022/102:00min/German with English Subtitles
Mira, an Austrian woman escapes from the pressure of running her family’s vineyard by playing women’s ice hockey, becoming the young captain. Then Theresa, a new player, arrives to challenge Mira’s rigid worldview. Mira is closeted to her teammates but finds herself instantly attracted to Theresa, leading Mira to adopt a not-so-friendly attitude to the new girl. When Mira’s brother Paul breezes back into town, he not only brings the opportunity for family reconciliation but also an excuse for Mira to get closer to Theresa when he invites them out clubbing in the streets of Vienna.
“Its singular focus is commendable and showcases a quietly powerful performance from Schaller and announces Stern as a filmmaker to watch” – Christian Gallichio: The Playlist
Hors-Jeu (Outsiders) d. Hannah Cauhépé/France/Turkey/2022/10:00min
